Faith Academy salutatorian Brittney Church, of Victoria, talks about playing sports in high school at her home. Church was MVP in both volleyball and basketball this past season at Faith Academy.

SALUTATORIAN: Brittney Church

• GPA: 3.95 (96.02 average)

• COLLEGE: Blinn College

• ACTIVITIES: Basketball, volleyball, softball

• PARENTS: Russell Church and Mary Alice Mikel, of Victoria

Sports are ingrained in the DNA of Brittney Church - a talent and passion passed down from her father.

When she graduates from Faith Academy on Sunday, she'll tote several awards - Most Valuable Player in volleyball and basketball, the coaches award in softball and the esteem of being salutatorian of her class.

"My dad has always loved basketball," she said. "Every day, we'd talk about it. I guess you can say I have a high basketball IQ."

Brittney doesn't just have a firm grasp on the subject, her father said, but she also has a leadership quality that allows her to be a good coach.

Brittney, 18, of Victoria, will head to Blinn College in the fall, where she will begin taking general education classes and major in business management. She plans to attend Texas A&M and eventually become a coach.

"She is a great leader and a great teammate," her coach, Dusty Lemke, said. "She always tried to get the best out of her teammates, even with freshmen. She was good with teaching them through her previous experience."

Brittney said she's strategic because she watches everybody on the court.

"I learn from what they do," she said.

Brittney said she doesn't plan to continue sports professionally, but she might join an intramural team or two. While her dad worries she'll have a void in her life, her coach said he's excited to see where she'll go academically with more time on her side.

"She's put that much effort into sports and academics and been this successful," Lemke said. "The sky's the limit for what she can accomplish."
