UHV duo named to All-America teams

UHV players Rachel Laird and Shelby Smith were named to the 2014 NAIA Softball All-America teams Friday.

Laird, a junior from La Marque, was selected to the second team after compiling a team-high .564 batting average and leading the team with 67 runs, 92 hits, 16 RBIs, four doubles and a home run and a UHV single-season record of 43 stolen bases, according to a release.

Smith, a La Porte freshman, earned honorable mention recognition. Smith hit 19 doubles and compiled a .482 batting average with 59 RBIs, 47 runs, 81 hits, 17 stolen bases, five home runs and three triples.

Both players had been named to the several conference and regional teams.
