“It was miserable,” she said.
Since Sunday afternoon, Hearthstone Assisted Living in Victoria has provided housing and care to Perez and other employees and residents of Hearthstone’s Texas City branch.
Like many Hurricane Ike evacuees, Perez isn’t sure how or if her home weathered the storm. And she’s only got a limited supply of clothes.
“They pretty much came with a bag and that’s it,” said Laura DeLeon, Hearthstone’s community relations director in Victoria.
Hearthstone is asking Victorians to donate money, food, beverages, bathroom items, bedding and, above all, clothes to the Texas City evacuees temporarily staying at the assisted living community.
“We don’t have clothes,” stressed Hearthstone General Manager Cindy Kristek, explaining the evacuees only packed a three-day supply of shirts.
Residents can make donations in person or request a Hearthstone employee retrieve the items.
Hearthstone has already benefited from the kindness of Texas from Victoria and farther afield, Kristek said. One man from Boerne donated $1,000. Another couple from Victoria donated the use of their lake house.
On Monday, Rebecca Shelton, of Victoria, gave several pieces of women’s and children’s clothing. She planned to donate more.
“I have some Avon products that I’m sure they would love,” she said.
About $3,000 in cash and other items have been donated so far, DeLeon said.
Even some of Victoria’s schools have gotten involved. At St. Joseph High School, students are collecting personal hygiene products for the evacuees.
Nazareth Academy Catholic School is holding a week-long clothing drive.
“The kids are all enthusiastic about it,” said Scott Kloesel, Nazareth’s principal. “They love helping.
Hearthstone has done its best to make the evacuees feel at home. When they drove up to the assisted living facility on Sunday, the staff met them with cheers and hugs. And when staffers went to bed, they found comfort packs of lotions and body sprays.
“They even got to the last detail of getting girl products for us,” Perez said.
