"Unfortunately, many times they're right,” he said. “But there are simple steps that can greatly reduce the chance that they'll successfully strike your business."
And the SBDC is working to make sure people know those steps.
The SBDC and DeGoLa Resource Conservation and Development will sponsor a seminar about how entrepreneurs can protect both themselves and their customers from identity theft.
Speaker Bert Howard, a certified identity theft risk management specialist, will cover topics such as the basics of identity theft, how to reduce the risk and steps business owners are required to take by law to protect customers information, according to the release.
“This is an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the tools of the criminals' trade, how you can lock the doors of information and how you can keep from being fined or sued if a thief picks the lock,” Harper said in the release. “If you accept any information from customers, you need to know what we will be presenting at this seminar.”
