4H Round-Up
advertising

The Victoria County 4-H program is currently enrolling members for the 2008-2009 4-H year. 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.

4-H is about having fun, learning, exploring and discovering. In 4-H, young people make new friends, develop new skills, become leaders and help shape their communities.

4-H gives them a chance to pursue their own interests - from photography to computers, from building rockets to raising sheep.

They go places - to camp, to state and national conferences. They learn to be leaders and active citizens. In 4-H clubs, they serve as officers and learn to conduct meetings, handle club funds, and facilitate group decision-making.

4-H members get involved in volunteer projects to protect the environment, mentor younger children and help people who are less fortunate.

If you are a young person between the ages of 9 and 19 (or 8 years old and in the third grade) and would like to become a member of the 4-H program or would like to find out what 4-H can do for you, please call Sarah Brandes at the Victoria County Extension Office at 361-575-4581 or visit us online at http://victoria-tx.tamu.edu.

Plant Identification 4-H Project

The second year of this project will be taught again from October through November. About 10 youth participated last year accomplishing the following: Had access to and learned about 125 different plants; participated in local, district and Houston Livestock Show Plant Contests and have worked with Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists to identify 98 different plant species on-site for the development of a grant for a new Victoria City Park - the Lone Tree Creek Park. Remember, plants are everywhere. We must have them to live. They take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen which we need to breathe and live.

Furthermore, they provide food and fiber for us to live by. Do you want to know what plants are best for wildlife? Which are best for livestock? Which are native and which can improve our environment? The first meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the 4-H Activity Center.
