Their music has been given a lot of labels. Latin rock. World music. An eclectic blend of flamenco, rock and blues.

But Del Castillo guitarist Mark Del Castillo likes to describe their sound as World Rock music.

“It’s definitely world music but it has a rock sensibility to it. There are so many different influences between the band members and we just throw everything in there, from pop to jazz to the blues,” he said. “People like to call us Latin rock but it’s more than that.”

Del Castillo, which is based in Austin, will perform Friday night as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. The six-member band began in 2000 when Del Castillo and his brother Rick decided to put together an album for their parents and friends in their hometown of Brownsville. Since then, the band has taken off, Del Castillo said, much to their surprise.

“We’ve been friends forever and we just got together to make some music. But we didn’t expect it to take off so quickly,” he said.

Two of the biggest highlights for Del Castillo was working with director Robert Rodriguez on the soundtrack to “Kill Bill” and recording a song with Willie Nelson. They also won Album of the Year at the 2007 Austin Music Awards.

The Del Castillo concert begins at 8 p.m. Friday at the Power Avenue Warehouse, 402 E. Power Ave. Tickets are $15 and are sold online on www.uhvconnect.org, or at Cal-Com Federal Credit Union, T-Town Music, Siesta Restaurant and through members of the Victoria Alliance for Latino Education.
