Tonight residents of Victoria will hear her discuss censorship and the arts.
Oring will kick off The Victoria College Lyceum Series at 8 p.m. today at the college fine arts auditorium.
“We feel Sheryl Oring will be a great speaker because of all the experience she has with people,” Robert Hodde, professor of speech and drama, said.
In 2004 Oring came up with the “I Wish To Say” project to find out what ordinary people wanted to say to the nation’s leaders.
“She will be able to expose the community and students to the different people she has met and their ideas,” Hodde said.
In 2004 she was named “Person of the Week” by Peter Jennings. She is now working on letters to the next president.
“She is a talented and intelligent person and I urge people to come and listen to her,” Hodde said.
She will be on campus for the opening reception for “Translations: Art Inspired by the Written Word” from 4 to 6 p.m.
“The art department was first to book her and we thought because she has traveled the country and met various people her experiences would be eye opening to the students,” Hodde said.
The Lyceum series has been held for more than 30 years.
“The idea is to bring in talented and extraordinary speakers,” he said.
