Propane isn’t just for barbecuing anymore.
The Schwan Food Company trucks have been running on propane since the late 1970s, Billy Barrera, Victoria site general manager, said. Company leaders made the transition in response to a gasoline shortage.
While less fuel efficient than gasoline, propane makes it easier to maintain the vehicles with the added bonus of helping the environment, he said.
“Turns out we’re one of the most environmentally friendly fleet camps,” he said.
Propane isn’t as cheap as it once was, but it’s readily available and comes from domestic sources.
Schwan delivers food and ice cream to homes that order it, charging only $1 for delivery, Barrera said.
“It’s nothing now,” he said, considering the price of just one gallon of gasoline hovers around $3.30.
The company has been working with Clean Air Victoria to promote the use of such clean alternative fuels. Schwan will have trucks at the Odyssey! National Alternative Fuels Day event in Victoria to help residents learn about the benefits of propane.
And yes, they’re giving out free ice cream.
“It’s what we’re known for,” Barrera said, smiling.
Propane exhaust creates 60 to 70 percent less smog than the hydrocarbons in gasoline exhaust
Converting small utility engines such as lawn mowers to burn propane instead of gasoline can reduce emissions of ozone precursors by a third.
