Rain is in the forecast today, but Victoria County Judge Don Pozzi on Monday asked people to be careful when burning outdoors.

“We’re not to the point yet where we need to impose a burn ban,” he said during commissioners court. “But I caution those burning outside to be cognizant of the wind conditions and dryness.”

He asked that people not leave fires unattended and that they use screens over burn barrels.

Victoria Fire Chief Vance Riley said there hasn’t been a large number of wildfires.

“But there has been an increase in the last week,” he said. “We are getting very concerned.”

Riley said there were seven or eight wildfires last week in different parts of the county. The windy conditions have added to the fire threat, he said.

A cold front is forecast to arrive in the Victoria area today. Joel Veeneman with the National Weather Service said that will continue the windy conditions.

The front should also bring a 50-percent chance for rain to the area.

“It looks like right now there isn’t a tremendous amount of moisture with it,” Veeneman said. “We’re looking at between a quarter to half an inch of rain.”

The front is weak and not expect to affect temperatures much. Today’s high should be in the upper 80s after a low this morning in the low 70s.
