HALLETTSVILLE — About 10 suspected illegal immigrants ran from officers after an attempted traffic stop Friday morning.

Deputy Mike Gibson attempted to stop a 1996 four-door Ford pickup for speeding near the intersection of U.S. Highway 77-Alternate and U.S. Highway 90-Alternate at 9:15 a.m., but the pickup ran through a fence and into a pasture, Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon said.

The pickup stopped and about 10 people jumped out, ran through the pasture and absconded down a creek, Harmon said.

Harmon, three other deputies, Precinct 1 Constable Alton Brown and Precinct 2 Constable Joe Nieto responded to assist, but weren’t able to capture the suspected illegal immigrants, all of whom appeared to be men, the sheriff said.

“We’re continuing the search. We notified all the landowners in the area and made everyone aware,” Harmon said.

Harmon asks residents who spot the men or see suspicious activity to call the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office.

“We would like to remind people not to leave their vehicles unlocked with keys in the vehicles,” Harmon said. “Keep their doors and windows locked.”
