CUERO – Marie Gelles, the former city administrator in Helotes, has been hired as the interim city manager in Cuero.

Gelles will replace Cuero Police Chief Glenn Mutchler, who has served in the temporary capacity as city manager since Corlis Riedesel announced her retirement on May 16.

Mutchler said no date has been set for Gelles to begin work.

The city will continue to seek for a full-time replacement for Riedesel, who served as city manager for 10 years.

Gelles was hired through Texas First Group Replacement Service, an organization of former city administrators who make themselves available to cities on an interim basis. The Cuero City Council made the decision during special session Thursday night after interviewing three potential candidates from Texas First. The vote was 6-1, with councilwoman Shirley Riemenschneider voting against.

Gelles served as the chief administrative officer in Helotes from September 2001 to September 2003. She also worked as the executive director of the Helotes Economic Development Corporation from September 2005 to March 2007. Her experience includes economic development manager for the San Antonio Water System, assistant court administrator for the Bexar County Commissioners Court, and as a budget and research analyst for the City of San Antonio.

She holds a master’s degree in Public Administration and Policy from the University of Nevada-Reno.
