Melly Perez, 56, and Genero Castillo were transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center by a LifeFlight helicopter, Chief Deputy Curt Gabrysch with Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said.
Louis Moreno, believed to be 40, was transported to University of Texas Medial Branch in Galveston by Citizens Air Medical. He was in the most critical condition on Thursday, Gabrysch said.
Perez was still in critical condition while Castillo was upgraded to fair condition, hospital personnel said Friday. UTMB hospital staff said they didn’t have information available on Moreno.
The three men were cutting an inactive gas pipeline when the torch they were using touched flammable leftover oil residue, sparking a flash fire. The men suffered burns on 50 percent to 75 percent of their bodies, Gabrysch said.
Hilcorp Energy Company hired the three men from RCS Demolition of Midland to take apart and remove pipelines on the West Ranch on Farm-to-Market Road 616 West about a mile south of Vanderbilt.
