Superintendent's column: Students show appreciation to veterans

As superintendent of schools for the Victoria Independent School District, I have the privilege to experience the "power of our people" on a daily basis. As the city of Victoria began preparing for Warrior's Weekend, the Victoria ISD stood ready to do our part. Our students were involved last Saturday in placing the American flags at the Field of Honor. We were so proud of our students as they displayed great respect for the flags and the families of the people who sponsored them. During the week, one of our schools went on a field trip to the Field of Honor. These fifth-grade students from Mission Valley Elementary School were so respectful and so understanding that when a group of students knelt down in prayer for our soldiers, they were joined by the rest of their classmates. And then, Friday, the warriors rolled into town. It was an amazing sight to see hundreds of our students and staff lined up and down the side of the roadway to pay their respects to our wounded warriors and welcome them to the opening ceremony at Faith Family Church.
