May 3, 1908

A new schedule for the Victoria division of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio road, to become effective May 10, was issued in Houston yesterday from the office of Colonel J.T. Anderson, general passenger agent. The train going west from Houston, that formerly left at 7 a.m., will depart at 9:15 a.m and reach Victoria at 2:30 p.m.; and San Antonio at 7:30 p.m. The train that formerly left at 4 p.m. will leave at 4:15 p.m. and will reach Victoria at 9:12 p.m. and Cuero at 10:30 p.m. The train returning from Cuero leaves there at 6:30 a.m. and arrives in Houston at 1:15 p.m.

May 3, 1933

Refugio County has the promise of a big oil field about nine miles northeast of the Refugio townsite field and five miles northeast of the nearest production, which is in the Fox-Lambert area, right near the town of Greta. The Greta Oil Company (George E. Smith and Associates) No. 1 O’Brien showed oil on a drill stem test in 14 minutes. When coming out of a drill pipe, the well flowed over the derrick.

Mrs. Ben White and Mrs. John N. Kennedy, along with her daughter, Miss Karen Kennedy, give a dinner party at the Victoria Country Club recently for Miss Linda Hillsamer, a graduating senior at Victoria High School. Guests included Judy Hill, Judy Ezell, Laverne Wallace, Karen Gerdes, Kay Schultz, Frankie Bruce, Carolyn Smith, Jane Welder, Ann Williams, Marcie Kirkpatrick, Sandra Einkauf, Janet Uetrecht, Mrs. W. E. Williams and the honoree’s mother, Mrs. A.L. Hillsamer.

Marilyn Ruth Hoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Hoff, was honored on the occasion of her fifth birthday with a party recently at the home of her parents in Schroeder. Children attending were Raneetta and Myra Sue Berger, Barbara and Ruby Waitschies, Leslie and Waylan Berger, Morgan Ruschhaupt and Linda Hoff.

The Victoria Community Center was the scene of intense activity Monday as booths were set up and other preparations made for the opening of the second annual Victoria Farm and Ranch Show at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Awards for outstanding community service were presented to several Jaycees during the Victoria chapter’s recent annual installation of officers. Named as Jaycee of the Year was Mike Martignoni, who also was installed as the groups executive vice-president. Dennis Otto received the C. William Brownfield Award for a outstanding first year Jaycees, and special recognition for his work on the Victoria Livestock Show, a chapter project.

The annual Victoria Police Department bicycle registration program will be conducted at local elementary schools Monday through Friday, according to Sgt. Larry Luna of the crime prevention unit. Luna said police officers will attach Victoria bicycle licenses stickers on bicycles brought to the schools for registration. The description of the bicycle, the owner’s name, address, phone number, the bicycle’s factory serial number and the license number will be recorded on registration forms and filed at the police department.
