Helen Archer
PORTLAND - Helen Archer, 105, of Portland, formerly of Victoria, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010. She was born Sept. 15, 1904 in Shiner, the daughter of the late Theo and Ophelia Dreyer Rogge.
She attended public schools in Shiner and Southwestern University in Georgetown. She was a school teacher in her early career, and during that time she met and married Jewel S. Archer in 1930. They lived in Kenedy, Texas, and Palacios, before moving to Victoria in 1945. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Victoria, a honorary life member of Methodist Women, a member of Travis Groce Bible Class, and a member of Violet Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Victoria.
In 1986 she moved to Portland to be near her family. She joined the First United Methodist Church in Portland. She was always proud of her Texas heritage, and joined the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Clara Driscoll Chapter in Corpus Christi.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jewel Archer; her parents; brother, George Rogge; sisters, Selma Rogge Boeckman and Mae Rogge Martin; and a niece, Sandra Boeckman Redmon.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Turner and husband Ken of Portland; grandsons, Kenny Turner and wife Gail, Ted Turner and wife Cindy, all of Corpus Christi, and John Turner and wife Leah of Austin; five great-grandchildren, Grady, Stefani, Clare and Emily Turner of Corpus Christi and Sarah Jean Turner of Austin; two step-grandchildren, Clint Harris and wife Meredith of Katy and Kelly Harris Grimes and husband Josh of Luling; three step-great-grandchildren, Reagan Harris, Aubrey Grimes and Tristan Grimes; also surviving are two nieces, Ann Koontz and husband Dudley and GiGi Reese and husband Bobby.
Helen had an excellent memory of the past and present times. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2010 at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Victoria, with Reverend Mark Porterfield officiating. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Portland.
