ELORINE L.G. HAHN
YORKTOWN - Elorine Louise Gerhardt Hahn, age 89, of Yorktown Texas, died at her home on April 1, 2013, when she left to be with her Lord.
She was born October 27, 1923 at the family home near Yorktown, Texas, the first child of the late William and Louise Wagner Gerhardt. Elorine grew up as somewhat of a tomboy, preferring the outdoors, climbing trees, riding horses, and playing around the creek near her home. She and her sister, Doris, rode a horse to and from school every day, waiting first for the horse to be caught by their father which frequently resulted in a late start and being tardy to class. Visits to her grandparents were a highlight. Her Grandma Gerhardt would give her magazines or books, which she took outside to read while lying in a natural hammock of wisteria vines. Grandma Wagner would take her eggs to town in Gillett to sell so she could buy fabric to sew Elorine a new dress. Her father taught her to sew, following the instructions he was given when he purchased a sewing machine in San Antonio. Over the years she became quite the seamstress, always a perfectionist, saying she would rather sew than eat. Following graduation from Yorktown High School, she stayed home to help out with her younger brother and sister.
Elorine loved flowers, plants and trees, always working in her garden and flower beds, weeding and watering. Over her last weeks her garden was blooming away with many different colors of roses, irises, bluebonnets, snapdragons, geraniums and more. Her oatmeal raisin cookies were inimitable. Her peach and apple pies were a delicious cross between pie and cobbler. Elorine taught her children to pray; made certain they always went to Sunday School and taught Sunday School herself, for a time. She never hesitated to spank or swat and made certain her children knew if they got in trouble at school, she would always take the side of the teacher.
She met her husband, Herbert H. Hahn, at church. They were wed on June 14, 1944, leaving the church to drive to La Grange for a honeymoon because that was as far as the tires on their car could take them, given shortages and rations due to the war. Together they raised four children: Fred G Hahn, wife Carlea; Harvey J Hahn; Mary Beth, husband Michael Ressman, all of Yorktown; and Sandy E, husband Avi Ghosh, of Geneva, Switzerland. They were blessed with seven grandchildren: Jessica, (Travis) Respondek; Ellen Hahn; Chad (Kim) Hahn; Benjamin (Sarah) Hahn; Kara (Brett) Bennett; Daniel Hahn and Robin Hahn. Fourteen great grandchildren complete the family. Elorine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Dr William Gerhardt and her sister, Doris Jones. She is survived by a sister, Barbara Mueller, husband Nathan; brother-in-law Gerry Jones and sister-in-law Judy Gerhardt, along with many nieces and nephews.
