GWENDOLYN HATCH REGAN
PORT LAVACA - Gwendolyn Hatch Regan, 101 passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013. Gwen was born on September 13, 1912 to the late Mary Laura Randolph and Edgar Hatch in Bloomington.
The family settled with their second daughter, Mary Kathryn Hatch Denham, on the Tom Traylor Ranch where Ed was a foreman. It was only three miles from Bloomington, where Gwen and Mary attended school. Gwen graduated from Bloomington High School in 1932. She and Mary moved to Port Lavaca, where Gwen met W.P. Regan, Jr. They were married on November 17, 1931 in Grace Episcopal Church, where all four of their children would each be christened.
Gwen and Mary's Grandmother, Ann Maria Hatch, who they called "Gobby", was a classical pianist who also lived with the family on the ranch, and passed her musical talent to Gwen starting when she was four. Her early career as a pianist began in earnest in the Bloomington schools where she played marches while her classmates marched to their classes. Gwen would entertain thousands of people with her talent during the course of her long life.
In 1951, Gwen began working as a receptionist for the late Dr. William G. Smith, and in 1958, she started a 30 year professional career as bookkeeper of Cole's Department Store when it was on Main Street, and later in the Viking Mall. For 15 years during the career, Gwen teamed her piano skills with Ruth Westerholm's organ skills at the old Shell Fish Restaurant. She later played 7 years at the Day's Inn Restaurant, and for many years played at various meetings of the local Lion's and Rotary organizations, as well as at the Hatchbend Country Club (named after her family). Her blindness of the last 13 years never deterred her ability at the keyboard, since she played by ear. She most recently entertained her fellow residents at Trinity Shores after the noontime or evening meals.
Gwendolyn Hatch Regan was preceded in death by her parents, husband and her only sister, Mary Hatch Denham. She is survived by her daughter Mary Gwen; sons, William Patrick III, Edgar Hatch and Robert Michael, grandson Kevin Patrick; great-grandsons K.P. and Cooper; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
