SISTER M. GREGORIA BERGER
VICTORIA - Sister M. Gregoria Berger, 70, of Victoria, died Sunday, July 14, 2013. She was born April 7, 1943, in Garwood, Texas to the late Alfred Paul Berger and Helen Frances Popp Berger. She was a Catholic and a member of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament.
Sister Gregoria received her grade school education at St. Mary School in Nada and then attended Nazareth Academy where she received her high school diploma.
She entered Nazareth Convent, Victoria as a candidate and then became a postulant on Sept. 8, 1959 and received the habit on Aug. 6, 1960 and made her first profession of vows on Aug. 6, 1961.
She received a BA Degree with a major in math and a minor in biology from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio and took courses to become a certified librarian.
During her 52 years of her religious profession, Sister Gregoria ministered at St. Michael School in Weimar, St. Leo School in San Antonio, Nazareth Academy and Our Lady of Victory in Victoria, and St. Michael School in Cuero. In 1985, she was appointed treasurer for Nazareth Academy, a position she held until 2004. After taking a semester sabbatical, Sister Gregoria took on the management of the IWC Gift Shop until illness prevented her from continuing this ministry. In recent months she embraced the Apostolate of Prayer and Suffering.
Some of her favorite pastime activities were sewing and arts and crafts.
Preceded in death by: parents, Alfred Paul Berger and Helen Frances Popp Berger; sisters-in-law, Gladys Vyvial Berger and Pam Berger; nephew, Michael Berger; great-nephew Jace Bevers.
Survivors: Sisters: Carol and her husband, Mike Rainbolt; Jeanette and her husband Frank Sprta; and brothers, Al and his wife Gladys Berger; John and his wife Lena Berger; Jim and his wife Carolyn Berger; Patrick Berger, and Tim Berger: nieces and nephews.
Viewing of the body and scriptural rosary will be at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, at Incarnate Word Convent. A wake service with evening praise and sharing of memories will be held at the convent at 6:30 p.m. on July 16.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the convent on Wednesday, July 17. Burial will follow at Catholic Cemetery No. 3.
Pallbearers will be her five brothers, Al, John, Jim, Pat, and Tim Berger.
Memorials may be made to Incarnate Word Convent, Nazareth Academy, Hospice of South Texas, or donor's choice.
