META M. WAGNER
SHINER - Meta Marthalyn "Marthe" Wagner, passed away peacefully at home, on July 29, 2013, at the age of 85
Marthe was born on March 2, 1928, in Shiner, Texas, to Rudie and Meta (Holchak) Valenta. After her mother's untimely death, she was raised by her father and their extended family. Rudie then married Leonida (Needles) Schumann, who lovingly raised Marthe as her own.
Marthe graduated from Shiner High School in 1945 as valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her degree in sociology, and worked for the Dean of Women.
On June 9, 1952, Marthe wed Robert James Wagner, MD in St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. They resided in San Antonio, Texas where she was employed by Alamo National Bank while Bob completed his residency. Shortly thereafter, they returned to Shiner where they established their lifetime home.
Marthe's many interests included world travel, attending theatrical productions, reading, playing bridge, and coffee clache chatter at the local pharmacy. Her knowledge and expertise in the culinary arts was unparalleled-she could often be found perusing recipes from her extensive cookbook collection, or garnering new ones from the cooking channel. She was avid, loud and faithful supporter of her beloved Texas Longhorns, and passed her love of all sports to her family. She could hold her own in any conversation with her sports minded son-in-laws and grandchildren. Her eyes lit up at the mention of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she never missed an opportunity to attend their special events.
Marthe also believed in giving back to her community and did so by becoming an active member of many community organizations, such as Catholic Daughters of America, Hospital Auxillary (Pink Ladies), and the Bicentennial committee. She continued her mother-in-law's legacy by spending many years helping coordinate the Catholic Church Bazaar, supported community efforts to fund and build the Shiner Public Library, and was instrumental in establishing the multi-year reunions of Shiner High School.
She will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses, Lisa Bunting (Don) of Houston, Duff Wagner (Sherri) of Shiner, Gina Valis (Don) of Shiner and Kelly Sengelmann (Mark) of Bastrop.
"Granny Shiner" is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Scott Bunting (Pepper), Drew Bunting (Erica), Garrett Valis (Angela), Haley Valis Spann (Ryan), Jessica Valis Shimek (Scott), Shea and Eric Sengelmann, and 4 great-grandchildren: Peri, Lawson, Luke and Navie.
Her loving husband of 50 years, Dr. Robert J. Wagner, preceded her in death (2003).
Visitation starting at 12 noon Wednesday, July 31, 2013 with a wake service at 7 p.m., at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home in Yoakum.
