CHARLES H. HARRIS
HARAHAN, LA - Charles "Charley" H. Harris, of Harahan, LA died Sunday, June 2, 2013 of Alzheimer's disease. He was born on January 16, 1929 in Beckville, Texas to the late Houston H. Harris and Willie Young Harris.
He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Claire Strieber Harris, and his sister, Stella Moser.
Survivors include: his daughter, Cindy Harris Horchoff (Pat) of New Orleans, LA; sons, Kevin Harris of Montclair,NJ, and Wayne Harris (Eileen Crowe) of Olney Maryland; grandchildren, Michael and Katie Horchoff, Evan, Gabriel, Colin and Luke Harris; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Clifford and Harriet Strieber; nephew,Robert Moser (Debbie); nieces,Catherine Grimm and Cheryl Strieber.
He graduated from Lutcher High School in Orange,Texas and attended Lamar Junior College prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. Following his military service he attended the University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a degree in Geology. He began working with Chevron, geoprospecting in Montana and Wyoming, prior to returning to Texas.
Charley began his career as an engineer in the dredging industry with Bauer Dredging in Port Lavaca, TX, in 1959. He quickly moved from Project Engineer to Estimator. In 1969, he moved his family to New Orleans to become the Chief Estimator of the newly formed T.L James and Company's Dredging Division. After T. L. James was bought by Weeks Marine in 1998, Charley continued to perform estimating functions for 6 years and retired in November, 2004, after 45 years in the industry. He was active in the LMVD Branch of the Associated General Contractors and was a member of the Society of American Military Engineers.
Charley enjoyed 'cooking' Wednesday night dinners for the family, long talks and bourbon on Friday nights with his dear friend Adrian Cordes, and spoiling his grandkids. He was a devoted husband, father and "Papa". He was a parishioner of St. Rita of Cascia in Harahan.

Visitation will be at 10am followed by a Funeral Mass at 11am on Monday, June 10, 2013 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Yorktown, Texas. Interment to follow at Westside Cemetery.
