ALICE L.A. MINATRE
VICTORIA - Alice Leona Argo Minatre, age 88, of Victoria, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013. She was born November 23, 1924 in Wood Hi to the late John and Nina Smith Argo.
Alice attended Casa Blanca School and Wood Hi School in rural Victoria County before marrying a handsome cowboy that lived down the road from her family in Wood Hi. Alice first noticed Noel R. "Slim" Minatre when he would work cattle with his brothers in the neighboring pastures. Slim's version is that Alice would climb up on the Argo family gate and admire him anytime he'd ride by. In fact, their courtship involved many extended horseback rides. Alice and Slim were married on December 17, 1943 and were inseparable until his death in 1984. Appropriately, Alice passed away on what would have been Slim's 92nd birthday.
Known for her delicious home-style cooking, Alice worked as a cook in the school cafeteria at Wood Hi and then later in the cafeteria at Alcoa in Point Comfort where Slim worked for many years before his retirement. Many of the dishes she'd prepare for family and friends came straight from the backyard garden that she and Slim enjoyed so much. Alice's home in Point Comfort was a favorite summertime destination of her grandchildren, who relished the opportunity to spend time with her there. Over the years, "Grandma Tree" came to be cherished by many of their friends as well.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Connie Minatre Filley and husband George J. Filley III of Victoria; daughter-in-law Teresa Minatre of Austin; granddaughters, Constance Filley Johnson, Nicole Minatre Trudeau, Persephone Filley Mikulec, Kelly Minatre Hess, and Dina Filley Hardwick; grandson George Minatre Filley IV; and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Noel R. "Slim" Minatre; son Gerald Minatre; sisters, Lucy Griffee, Lottie Rose, Lillian Reynolds, and Edith Lockstedt; twin brother, Allan Argo; and infant granddaughter, Alice Mary Filley.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Grace Funeral Home, with Pastor Carl Westbrook officiating. Burial will take place at the Wood Hi Cemetery immediately following the service.
