Gerald Leroy Wheeler

Born on Nov. 30, 1930

VICTORIA - Gerald "Jerry" LeRoy Wheeler, 82, was called home to the Lord on November 2, 2013. He was born on November 30, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas to Marie Elizabeth Jackson Wheeler and Clyde LeRoy Wheeler. He married Peggy Louise Cates O'Neill on June 17, 1950, she was the love of his life. He was the president and owner of Sportsman's Centers of TX and later became National Sales manager for Red Fox Athletics. Jerry was an avid golfer. Jerry was a lifelong Methodist and currently he considered his church home to be both John Wesley United Methodist and Friendship United Methodist. He was a loving husband, father, Daddy, Gramps, Great Gramps and friend. He loved God, his family and life. He brought joy to many with his smile and sense of humor.
Jerry graduated from Sundeen High School and attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was an athlete and played football, baseball and basketball. He coached many youth baseball teams and served as president of American Little League. Through the years he served in many positions in his church and community. He was a member of the Crossraods Emmaus Community where he worked several walks. This led him to become a lay minister in the Methodist Church and enabled him to deliver sermons in several area churches. Preaching was such a joy to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter Jennifer Louise Jones. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Peggy, daughter Penny Louise Jones and husband John Leslie Jones, son, Larry LeRoy Wheeler and wife Beverly Dullnig Wheeler all of Kingwood, TX, son Mark Alan Wheeler of Humble, TX, and son Jeffrey Layne Wheeler of The Woodlands, TX. He is also survived by granddaughters Brenda Wheeler Dygert and Corinn Wheeler Wilson. Grandsons are Austin LeRoy Wheeler, Bryan Alan Wheeler and Jeremy Ryan Wheeler. Great-Grandchildren are Paige, Hunter, Peyton Dygert, Jackson, Wyatt Wilson, Trent, Thailer, Olivia Rooney, Harrison and Charlotte Wheeler, on the ways are babies Ross and Claire. Also a part of our family, lifelong friends Robert (Bobby) McKinley and wife Betty McKinley.
Funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the John Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy Alex officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Austin LeRoy Wheeler, Jeremy Ryan Wheeler, Bryan Alan Wheeler, Richard Wilson, Mark Dygert and Robert McKinley. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bobby Whitefield, Bob Shults and Rev. David King.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship United Methodist Church Parsonage Fund of Porter, TX.
