Born on July 4, 1930
ATHENS - Fred B. Davenport, 83, died at his home in Athens on Thursday, November 7, 2013, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Brady to the late Charles B. and Lora Hart Davenport on July 4, 1930. He graduated from Galena Park High School and attended San Jacinto Junior College. He served his country in the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Estes during the Korean conflict and received an honorable discharge. He was retired from Emery Airfreight in Houston after 20 years of service and moved to Victoria, where he retired from the Victoria Independent School District.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Lynette Davenport, two daughters Susan Dean of Stagecoach, Texas and Gayla Starnes of Houston, three sons Randy Davenport and Dr. Michael Davenport of Humble, and Tommy Davenport of Satsuma, Alabama, one stepson Todd Nitsche of Athens, and one stepdaughter Bonnie Laughlin of Houston, a sister Betty Kendrick of Waco, 14 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Eileen Pilkinton.
Fred was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Schroeder near Victoria for 18 years before moving to Athens 10 years ago, and is a current active member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and member of the Caresciples group.
Family visitation will be held on Monday November 11th at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church with Dr. Fred Rogers officiating.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Garrett Nitsche, Dustin James, Shawn Schiller, Nathan DeLos Santos, Chris Davenport, and Collin Davenport.
Burial will be in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Houston.
