MAMIE E. GARDNER
AKRON, OH - Mamie E. Gardner was born February 1, 1940 in Victoria, Texas. She was one of three children born to Pearl Ella and George Langley Senior.
Despite trauma and tragedy at an early age, Mamie graduated in 1957 from F.W. Gross High School second in her class. She was captain of the four-year championship basketball team in the state of Texas. She ran the anchor leg of the 440 yd. State Champion track relay team.
In 1957 she moved to Detroit, Michigan where she later married Morris E. Gardner and together they had two daughters, Marcy and Monica. Monica has preceded her in death.
In 1967 the Gardners' moved to Akron, Ohio. Mamie began her God- given purpose of caring for children as a Child Care Home Provider. Mamie's natural love for children and God given purpose led her to develop Kandy Kane Christian Day Care Center, Inc.
Mamie received numerous awards throughout her life. She was given the Summit County Award for making a difference in the lives of Summit county people through the Monica Gardner Diabetes Ministry. In 2011 the American Heart Association recognized her for helping to save the lives of women. She was Ohio's Director of the Year for National Association for the Education of Young Children. She was recognized by Governor Voinovich, as an outstanding participant in the Jobs Program of Ohio.
Her most cherished award was Mother of the Year 2010, from Jack and Jill of America. Mamie was a member of The House of the Lord for thirty-plus years. She was licensed and ordained a minister by Bishop F. Josephus Johnson II. She was a member of the Christian Education Council and one of the original board members of Emmanuel Christian Academy.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband of fifty years Morris, beloved daughter Marcy her adored grandson, Mark, nephew Patrick Langley, a niece Kim Langley Warrick (Malvin), three brothers-in-law, Oliver Gardner, Clarence Gardner (Bernice), Robert Gardner (Cortez) and, one "Heaven-Sent friend" Ophelia Jennings, faithful-friend Patricia Dillworth, and "spiritual" daughter, Linda Isaiah, Goddaughter Lauren Wood Cajuste and a host of other relatives and friends.
Homegoing services will be held Sunday, September 9, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at The House of The Lord, 1650 Diagonal Rd. Akron, OH 44320, Bishop F. Josephus Johnson, II. eulogizing. Interment will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church from 4:00 p.m. until time of service. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 753 Cascade Mills Dr. Akron, Ohio 44307.
