OLAN J. MCBROOM
REFUGIO - Olan Jackson McBroom, 92, of Refugio, passed away on Friday September 13, 2013. Olan was born February 7, 1921, in Rusk County, Texas, to Curby and Ida Pate McBroom.
He attended Rusk Texas School System; graduating in 1940. After graduation Olan joined the United States Army serving with the 36th Infantry Division of Texas (T-Patch) in Africa and Italy during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
After being honorably discharged from the army, he married Devena Scates on November 3, 1944, in Jacksonville, Texas. They moved to Refugio, Texas, in 1956, where Olan worked for Humble Oil (Exxon-Mobil) for over 35 years.
Olan served on the Refugio City Council, both as Councilman and Mayor. He loved Little League Baseball and managed a team for nineteen years. Olan was then elected District Administrator of District 29 where he served diligently for 36 years until his retirement in 2011 due to health reasons. He was a member of Assembly of God Church and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 6290.
Olan is survived by his wife of 69 years, Devena: two sons - Ronald McBroom (Becky) of Refugio, and Gary McBroom (Berni) of Victoria; four grandchildren - Ronald McBroom (Jennifer) of Ingleside, Melinda Henkhaus {Bruce} of Rockport, Casey McBroom (Tori) of McKinney, and Stacy Broome (Patrick) of Victoria; seven great-grandchildren - Heston, Hailey and Gavin Henkhaus of Rockport, Hunter and Michael McBroom of Georgetown, and twins Avery and Addisyn Broome of Victoria; one step-grandson, Jason Lewis of Ingleside; three brothers - C.J. McBroom (Libby) of Longview, Thomas McBroom (Diane) of Lufkin, and Ruben McBroom of Mineral Wells; and three sisters - Savannah Witt of Lufkin, Ruth Conway of Longview, and Josephine Watkins (Charles) of Douglas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters - Dorothy McBroom, Sue Gage and, and Murrell Reynolds.
Pallbearers are Greg Likens, Bob Scheizer, David Crebs, John Solis, George Rohr. Richard Webb, Joey Herrington, and Mike Weatherwax.
Honorary Pallbearers are Casey McBroom, Patrick Broome, Ronald McBroom, Bruce Henkhaus, Gordon Kemp, Ronnie Hessletine, Joey Herrington.
Visitaion will be held Saturday, September 14, 2013, from 6-8 pm at Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Refugio, Funeral Services will be held Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of Refugio. Graveside services will be held Monday, September 16, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Bradford Cemetery; Troupe,Tx.
