RICHARD C. PERYAM
GOLIAD - Richard C. "Dick" Peryam, resident of Goliad, died at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria on Sunday, April 28, 2014. He was 93 years old and died due to complications of pneumonia.
Richard was born to Thomas W. and Corinne Peryam on July 27, 1920, in Encampment, WY., on the ranch homesteaded by his grandparents, W.T. and Alice Peryam. Richard grew up in and around the San Francisco Bay area. He graduated from Mt. Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, Ca in 1938. After high school, he joined the Marine Corp reserve and was called to active duty in 1939. When World War II began, he was shipped to Palmyra Atoll in the North Pacific. After spending more than a year on Palmyra as a Gunnery Sergeant. Richard was shipped stateside to begin flight training. After successfully earning his "wings" as an aircraft carrier fighter pilot and the rank of 1st Lieutenant, he was being staged for the invasion of Japan just as the war ended.
Richard married Ruth Ann Grinaker of Oakland, Ca. in 1945. After being discharged from the military, he attended the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Master's Degree in Petroleum Exploration Geology. He then spent his entire career working for the Union Oil Company of California. During his career, Richard and his family lived in Santa Maria, CA; Whittier, CA, Havana, Cuba, New Orleans, LA., Houston, and Corpus Christi. He retired in 1983, and spent the summers living on his ranch near Salida, CO. and the winters living on his ranch near Goliad.
Richard was a man of many talents and interests, and nothing, including rebuilding a bulldozer was too great a challenge for him. During his retirement, he managed both of his ranch properties, and with his beloved wife, Ruth, hiked, fished, rockhounded and traveled extensively. In recent years he became an expert amateur astronomer.
Richard is survived by Ruth, his wife of nearly 69 years,; his children Thomas (Joyce) Peryam and Patti Chivvis; his grandchildren, Matthew (Angela) Chivvis and Richard (Valentina) Chivvis; his great-grandchildren, Liam Chivvis, Addy Chivvis and Robert Chivvis.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Corinne, and his sister Emblin Shotts.
A memorial service in his honor will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Goliad on Saturday, May 10th at 2 P.M.
