Widow shouldn’t be made to pay impound fees

The widow of an apparent homicide victim should not — that’s should not — pay the fee for impounding the car her husband was driving when he died. Why? Calhoun County should pay the fee because it impounded the car for the investigation into the death. The car is considered evidence in the case, but how long does it take to gather fingerprints, hair and any other pertinent forensic evidence? The homicide investigation pertaining to the car should take a short time, yet, since April 24, the car remains impounded. more >>

Forensics courses could lead to crime lab here

Maybe Horatio Caine (actor David Caruso) and his “CSI: Miami” crew weren’t there, but the forensic science used to solve a pretend crime at the University of Houston-Victoria was the real thing. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul is a rarity in politics. While many politicians face crisis of hypocrisy and questionable personal or political ethics, media attention surrounding Paul focuses on the merits of his ideas. Whether you agree or disagree with Paul’s views, it cannot be argued that the man has a strong sense of public ethics. He is honest and keeps his word, makes himself available to his constituents, and there has never been even a whiff of corruption from his office. more >>

Grand Theft may be stealing your children

Despite its popularity, Grand Theft Auto is a video game that glamorizes sex, theft, prostitution and other crimes. And left high and dry on their video-game island, young gamers learn to accept such acts as the norm, just like coconuts falling from a palm tree. Grand Theft Auto IV was the latest release at the end of April of this popular video game (see Victoria Advocate front page, April 30). more >>
