THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to anybody who can lower gas prices!

George

Victoria

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to well-meaning patriots who continue to fly their American and/or Texas flags well past the flags’ need of replacement.

Flying torn, tattered (even to the point of shreds) and faded flags is not only an eyesore, but also dishonors our land and an embarrassment to those of us who drive past them every day.

Thumbs down: I agree with Don in the “Thumbs up, thumbs down” last Saturday. I do not like “Mutts” and did enjoy “Fred Basset.” Also, what has happened to Baxter Black in the Sunday papers? I miss that column.

Yoakum

Thumbs Down to those who thought it would be a good idea to replace “Fred Basset” with “Mutts.” There have been some changes at the Advocate in the recent past that we don’t like, but this could be the last straw. Please bring back “Fred Basset.” He makes my day.

Thumbs down to Rueben Navarrette’s comment last Sunday that complaints about illegal aliens “are now limited largely to the rants of cable news demagogues.” When the Kenedy-McCain immigration bill was coming up for vote in the Senate it wasn’t “cable news demagogues” who overloaded the congressional communications switchboard in opposition. That many demagogues don’t exist. Navarette and Hernandez would like you to think they speak for all Hispanics.

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the community that responded to help the Mormon family in Placedo clean up the graffiti left by vandals .

Thumbs up to the Relay for Life and its successful events in the area to help the American Cancer Society fight cancer.

Thumbs up and a hearty welcome to Jeb Lacey, Victoria County's new emergency manager, who has just arrived and is hurriedly making preparations for the June 1 beginning of hurricane season.

Thumbs up to the San Antonio Spurs and beginning their march to another NBA championship.

Thumbs up to circulation of the Victoria Advocate, which stayed stable over the past six months when newspapers nationwide were declining in circulation by an average of 3.5 percent.

Thumbs up to the citizens of Bay City, who honored one of their fallen sons with dignity and class. A soldier from Bay City who was killed in Iraq on Monday, was the first person from Matagorda County to die in the war.

Thumbs up to the beginning of the summer blockbuster movie season, marked by the release of “Iron Man.” What better way to pass a hot summer afternoon than munching popcorn in an air-conditioned theater watching a great flick?

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to the wind and rain that made the effort by area youth and others who volunteered to participate in the Adopt-a-Beach program at Magnolia Beach difficult. The good thing was that the volunteers were determined and worked to clean the beach despite the elements.
