THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to City Councilman David Hagan. After seven years of frustration and no help from the city, we in Bronson Terrace Subdivision are finally getting our streets upgraded. Thank you David.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to the Ratcliff plea. It is sick. I guess it’s OK to sexually abuse just because he’s a big-shot man. If it would of been someone else besides a big-shot man, they would throw the key away.

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to the Northeast Little League team (11-12 year olds) upon its recent district victory. We wish the team well today.

Thumbs up to the Victoria school district for its work in awarding bids for one of our new schools and bringing them in under budget.

Thumbs up to the ongoing renovation work at the Museum of the Coastal Bend.

Thumbs up for the Invista wetlands project and the constant effort to make it a real learning center for our area schoolchildren, including helping them prepare for the state TAKS tests.

Thumbs up for the thousands of firefighters in their ongoing struggle to douse wildfires in California and several other states. These people work until they’re ready to collapse, all in an effort to save other people’s property.

Thumbs up for the new UHV regional economic development center, housing several agencies under one roof to work toward the economic health of our region in the future.

Thumbs up for the installation of new turf at Victoria’s Memorial High School football stadium, which has become such a first-class facility that school from all over are choosing it for "neutral site" and playoff games.

Thumbs up for the latest version of the Miss Victoria pageant, which showcases all the beautiful children of our city

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down on the faulty computer system that has Victoria’s 911 emergency center personnel worried about being able to respond quickly when trouble arises.

Thumbs down on the early part of the Atlantic hurricane season, which is already seeing some frightening tropical disturbances.

Thumbs down on the Iranian missile testing going on, a bad case of sabre rattling in an already-tense region of the world, and one that could lead to the outbreak of war if all sides are not very careful.

Thumbs down on former U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, both of whom hurt the candidates they probably support by their negative rhetoric.
