THUMBS UP

Thumbs up, certainly, to one of the most brilliant and caring of men, the executive director of Gulf Bend, Donald Polzin. May his new and ever-needed program work as well as all his other programs. This region is so much better, and very blessed, because of such good men.

Thumbs up to Aprill Brandon: Keep up the good work, there are a lot more nice guys out there than McPigs or Sick-Os.

If I had a long-lost daughter, I’d sure to be looking you up. You write a lot things I’ve said or thought of writing myself. I’m proud of you.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down, certainly, on the Advocate’s selection of the editorial cartoon which depicts that anyone opposed to the democratic candidate is a racist (Viewpoints, Aug. 29), disregarding the million reasons he should not be president. In this presidential election campaign, this newspaper would do well to only report the real and actual news. Your commentaries have left the Viewpoints page and are scattered all over the paper.

Thumbs down on the sports editors of the Advocate, who omitted in the Thursday edition, on purpose or by accident, showing the scheduled game of Texas Tech and E. Washington this Saturday evening, along with the hundreds of other scheduled games shown.

Thumbs down on Superintendent Bob Moore and all the school board: Are the administration and school board in charge of managing Victoria schools, or are the teachers and students?

Why waste the effort, ink and breath to discuss cell phones by students at school? You just have a rule that cell phones are not allowed on campus by students and teachers. It is not like there are not phones available in all school buildings if they have the need to make or receive a call. I realize this will damage the fragile ego of some students and anger some teachers. OK, please enroll in or teach in another school district as this is a rule not a debate.

What if students and teachers decide they want to smoke in class? How long would that have to be debated before they were allowed to smoke when and where they choose?

Administrators and school board, how about developing a some intestinal fortitude?

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up for the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office for leading the way in testing a new technology which could make it much easier to pinpoint the location of any emergency situation and get the proper help to that location faster.

Thumbs up for the alert law enforcement officers who, during a routine traffic stop, discovered and seized about 50 pounds of marijuana and arrested the two occupants in the car they had stopped.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down on the seemingly endless string of dangerous Atlantic hurricanes.

Thumbs down once again on Hurricane Gustav, which is being blamed for a 7-cents-per-gallon increase in the price of gasoline in Texas.
