Alfred Barrera, as the lazy shepherd Bartolo, is surrounded by the cast of the play that sing to him to encourage him to go see the baby Jesus in a performance of "Los Pastores - A Shepherd's Play" on Saturday at the Mission Espiritu Santos. Shepherd plays were created by priests in the 16th century to portray the word of God to Native Americans despite the language barrier between the two cultures.
