The "You Make a Difference" recipient provides direct services to the children in Victoria ISD who have been identified as "food insecure" and to many other students whose families are clients of one or more of the active member agencies of the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent. The agencies provide more than 22,000 meals every month in their service area. The BackPack Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when free or reduced-priced school lunches are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. This past summer, VISD children were even able to be served through the summer months. Across an 11-county area, upwards of 1,200 children participate in the backpack program.
