I hate medians...they serve no other purpose than to inconvenience people trying to get into or out of businesses that are on the wrong side of said medians. They also increase u-turns, which are more of a hazard, IMO.
"Medians are a great idea for people that can't think for themselves." I guess there are a lot of "those" people in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and every large city in this country! I love medians. They are great for traffic control!
Has the city ever thought about building a sidewalk underneath the bridge at John Stockbauer? My Dad disagrees with me on this becuase of when it rains. But, the city could build the sidewalk up a little higher than the creek.
Ok, actually, I myself suggest rerouting the trail to the Ben Jordon intersection months ago on these very blog pages, it seems like a great idea to me. A heck of a lot cheaper than a walkway overpass.
The shortest route kids always take, would seem to me to only apply to the kids that live in the neighborhood directly across JS, or the ones further down Leary Lane, north of the Sam Houston/Ben Jordon intersection.
After all us poor east side people have had to deal with VHS traffic since the 60's, then a double increase in traffic for the last 9 years due to consolidation, you know MHS.
The Poor deprived Woodway people, sigh, it will take them a little longer to go where they want, but hey, the kids are at school right across Hwy. 87, you don't have to drive alllll the way to the east side to deal with school matters, you know like open house s , band recitals and to gripe about poor Johnny or Suzy s teacher that just does not understand them, it's the teachers fault they act up!!!!
This whole town looks cheap. The city needs to spend the money ONCE and do it right from the get go. In that way, Victoria would begin to improve on its appearance. Right now, there is nothing in this town except two new high schools, that help us at all with regards to appearance and first impression.
i too would like to go the cheaper route. put 2 speed bumps on both directions and a middle island. add a street lamp and make it nice. even some island trees.
the reason is the kids are going to take the quicker route. no barrier is going to stop that. ask any kid.
this will be faster and you go always go to plan c or d later. the other way will be very expensive.
I still don't know who's bright idea it was to have the trail cross FIVE lanes of traffic in the first place. That should be common sense for people who RUN or exercise lol. Obviously the people who came up with this idea don't workout :)
The crosswalk should be done like North Navarro. You have five lanes - put the middle higher so you only have to cross two lanes at a time instead of 5 and put some slow down bumps on the road way to slow traffic.
And if traffic is high after school or before school they can always go with crossing arms on a timer so kids can cross.
Moving it to the other intersection is not a good idea. Have you seen that intersection - it is just as bad and the lights (like all the other lights in this town) don't work well or are too short.
And making the dead end where it is now won't help. Who is going to walk to a dead end and then turn around after seeing a wall or fence.
But mostly it goes to the same old idea of teaching kids and adults on how to CROSS THE STREET! Look both ways before crossing and then cross when it is SAFE. Not push a button and run like H*ll. People don't do that red light crossings?
Again the city tried to do something right, fouled it up and will compromise something that could have been rather unique. They should have built an overhead walkway to begin with and had something really nice.
I am so tired of these yahoos that keep throwing away good taxpayer money and in the same breath have the gall to up my taxes. If the town government cannot find someone to do the job correctly, don't do it at all. A pox on...

N45BA..."We(Victorians) may have the record for the most tax dollars spent on a single crosswalk."
WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER ONE! Makes me so proud.

December 30, 2009 at 6:57 p.m.N45BA, no need to worry, the almighty mayor lives in Woodway, such foolishness will never, ever happen there.

December 30, 2009 at 6:35 p.m.nb45- why do I care if you live west? I dont live east either. what does that have to do with crosswalks?
nb45 if you live west, wtf do you care what happens on east?!?!
the medians have cut down on wrecks. what is a busy street? the cheapest thing is to even close that sidewalk to nowhere. resolved.

December 30, 2009 at 4:10 p.m.Nevermind. I just saw the map.
2.1 miles
December 30, 2009 at 2:45 p.m.That's a good start!
Does anyone know how many miles the trail is?? Where it begins and ends?
