I challenge the naysayers to do something positive: Join a PTA, volunteer at a school, give school supplies to needy children. Do something to improve your community instead of bashing it.
You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. I think there is plenty of emphasis being put on staying in school. There are always going to be those who refuse to apply themselves and ultimately there is nothing the public can do about it.
Please, teachers know that new buildings are not the answer. Just as most teachers could have told you almost 10 years ago that putting them all in 1 high school wasn't the answer either. There are many of us (teachers) out here who know what it takes, but we aren't allowed to do it. No, the TAKS wasn't the right answer either but neither was "Bobby Jo" getting a diploma at 19 (or 20 at the time) just so he could play an extra couple of years of football but still couldn't pass a 5th grade test in math or reading.
IMO it all goes back to the 60's-70's too many freedoms for children and taking God out of the schools, not to mention our society. Too many children these days, don't value education, because mom/pop (whoever is raising them) does not value education. Being entertained and "feeling good about themself" is all that matters. Plus, drop-out have a few kids, can't get a job, welfare will take care of you. Hello there has got to be a better answer.

The "AU" rating is a direct reflection of a big problem that we have in visd. Our middle schools.
