I believe our society would weigh a lost less if there was more dancing, polka, salsa, and etc. It is also a cheap social event. It is said that dance halls have disappeared in favor of night clubs. I have noticed numerous post about Victoria having something special to draw outsiders to the area. Maybe a joint ethic dance festival with regional food. Could even bring back the endurance dance.
My PoPo taught me to Waltz & Polka at the VFW when I was about 7 or 8. I prefer the Polka to the Waltz, I guess cause its the speeded up version. I taught my daughter & am planning on teaching my granddaughter as soon as possible! It is the one & only time my daughter will dance with me in public!
Love, love love to Polka. It's about the only dance I can do "well" as you can add kicks & twirls & what not (depending on how much beer one has consumed). Moulton jamboree is coming up....time to Polka! I really wanted to go to Sweet Homes Polka Fest but I didn't find out about it until Sat night. : (
I grew up doing both the polka and the Schottische; they are so much fun and I'm not sure if the young people today know how much fun they are missing! My teenage boys do the "eye-rolling" thing when my husband and I try to teach them anything to do with country or that style of dance. Oh, the waltz, polka, Schottische...the good ole days. Of course, a big dance hall is a must...they have them all over around Austin, but you have to drive far from here to find one.
My Father In Law used to play in a Polka Band. Before becoming a member of this family, no, I'd never danced the polka.... I'm not very good at it, even though I've had some great dance parteners, but it's a lot of fun!

July 13, 2009 at 6:37 a.m.Does the Schottische count? If so, guilty as charged. At least I learned how to do it right.
