If the city would put money into the zoo and the park it may bring in money. Look at San Antonio Zoo it brings in money and brakenridge park use to be awesome. The train, the gardens, the museum. Why cant Victoria do something fun with its park. Make a train, a biotanical garden, sky rides, water park, make the zoo bigger. You build it and people with come!
It is totally unrealistic to expect a zoo too obtain grant money for operational support. Foundations and funding organizations look at the degree of community support, as well as the potential of a zoo or museum to rank and fund specific projects to better it, IE., an exhibit, program, research or special project. It is sad that a zoo with the name Texas Zoo and the diverse and interesting wildlife of Texas has not been able to expand into research, media, and more state of the art exhibits, but what has been done with the funding available is commendable. It is absolutely essential for a zoo or museum to keep up with the a professional standard via accreditation, however Texas as a whole has sadly undervalued, underfunded and non-managed its non game wildlife and cultural resources, park lands in a way that has emabarrasingly long kept the state at the very bottom of the United States in funding, sent professionals running from the state, and lowered other areas of operation and scale. So much for Texas pride, It is long past time to turn the trend around. The staffs struggle and work long, often stressfull hours to keep a zoo or museum open and current . It is important to find and retain the talented staff that can make things happen and to keep good vounteers. I urge the City to renew and recommit to the Texas Zoo.
