Thank you for your answer, dtewes. I appreciate the information. We have not been mowing our yard as often as probably our neighbors would like, trying to keep the lower grass a little shaded and keep in any residual moisture. I know it is best to do any watering after the sun goes down to cut down on evaporation, so will continue to do that when I water my plants.
Many years ago, a radio talk show host in Houston named Alvin Van Black was commenting on watering grass during a particularly dry spell. He said that he had learned to like brown grass -- you don't have to mow it which saves gasoline. He told his audience that he figured it was God's grass and if he wanted it watered, he'd rain on it.
VISDmom: When the city goes into the first stage of the conservation plan, people are simply asked to voluntarily conserve water. The situation would have to become much more serious before restrictions like you mention are enacted. That would happen when an index storage reservoir with back-up water becomes 50 percent empty. Right now that's not an immediate threat.
First of all, I agree with N4796V...why WOULDN'T someone agree to conserve what the same people shout from the rooftops they don't want San Antonio to have any of - our water?
Second (and PLEASE excuse my ignorance and don't write tacky blogs) they mentioned Level 1 water rationing earlier on this topic today and it is gone - what is that, what does it entail, or where can I find out more information about that? I assumed we would get to this point with no significant rainfall. I am guessing Level 1 means no watering between such and such times; same with washing your car and such, but that is just a guess.
And does anyone know any good rain dances? 'Cause we could sure use one (or two, or a dozen!) right about now! Prayer would work as well!
You know it's dry when all your ponds are dry. You know it's dry when grass begins to grow in the bottom of your dried up ponds. But you know it's REALLY DRY when the grass in the bottom of the ponds has dried out and DIED. Folks, that's DRY!
Even though I live in the county, I haven't watered my grass since the drought began. I don't want to use the water that I may need to use to survive and I figure if God wants it to be green, He'll make it rain.
1. I flush my toilet only once a week and usually before a weekend in case guests come over. They are not allowed to flush either.
2. I wash my clothes once a month, but sometimes I get lucky at the washateria and sneak my clothes into someone else's load for a cleaning. That saves a whole load of water!
3. I do not water my grass.
4. I do not cook anything that requires the use of water. If it does, then I open the cans of tuna with water and reuse that water.
5. I try to shower once a week and when I do, I wear my clothes so can also get a clothes wash in there.
6. I have taken to giving my pets any random liquid I have in the fridge versus using water. They have taken a fancy to fruit punch Capri-Sun.
I feel better already about my self and preserving water. Except I used the car wash the other day and had a pipe leak which probably cost a few hundred gallons, but all in all, it is going great now that I have no friends!
My grass is bad, too, but I'll help conserve as much as possible. The grass WILL grow back! I don't understand why the majority of the poll votes say "no" about conserving. I do everything that's needed to be done with water--hygeine, dishes, cleaning, wash, etc.etc.-and still keep my usage down. I don't waste-or-at least try not to waste. The only thing that may be neglected is my vehicle- It gets washed once a week(but not always on a Saturday(LOL).
darlins64...lol, our grass in the back is now hay. I'm still waiting for the weeds in the flower beds to die...they will be the last thing standing! lol
I'm already voluntarily conserving water -- we have a MUD company who charge an outrageous amount! My grass is dead! So I don't have to worry about mowing. LOL! even the weeds in my flowerbed are dying!
