The problem would be finding an affordable, equitable way of providing students with access to the implements whereby they would view their e-books. If the e-readers are devices like the Amazon Kindle, are they to be provided by the state or local school system? In either case, a likely impediment to adoption that I see has to do with equipment maintenance - I can't tell you how many textbooks I destroyed between 1989 and 2002 through abuse & careless tossing about, and e-readers are a tad more fragile.
Unfortunately, not everyone has family funds to own equipment for e-textbooks. Besides, if you did that, it would put the highliters and fascimile pieces of writng utensils to pasture! Hardcover should remain and possibly with the option of e-books. Hey, what if you had a power failure? Goodbye studying for the exam the night before! "Gee, teacher, I couldn't study. We had a power failure!" Just my 2 cents.
Let there be choices. I would have enjoyed my texts in MP3 format. I could have studied while riding horses or while jogging. That's how I retained info.
