YEA! and why we are at it we can cite the police officers for talking on the cell phone, two way radios and running a license plate number on the computer. Oh yea and how bout the ambulance driver that runs red lights and the Hearst that "forces " us off the road. How bout that pesky old farmer that never can seem to get his tractor off the road. I know, that person that uses the turning lane for an "on ramp", that should be jail time.
What about all the drivers that put on makeup and eat and drink and fiddle withhe radio while driving? Lets cite these people too. They aren't paying attention to driving.
In the mean time what is to be done about all the people that get in their vehicle, start using their cellphones then drive off? Yesterday I saw one that was speeding, smoking and using a cellphone; that to me is scary and an accident about to happen. I agree, the elderly should be tested more often and the rest that do NOT pay attention should be cited and points deducted from their driving privileges. Victoria needs to step up on traffic violations, don't look the other way and ignore the lousy drivers this town has!
forgot to mention. The elderly should also have to have a doctors, and eye doctors, Ok to renew their drivers license. Those are the ones that know the health of the driver.
Some of the differences between older and younger is various degrees of dementia, slowed reactions, failing eyesight, cataracts, degenerated joints, failing motor skills, hearing problems, and probably a few more. Younger drivers just plain do not pay attention.
arlewil sounds as if he may be in the "testing" category. The elderly and the teenagers are in the same category: They both think that they can get from A to B without paying attention to driving at all and they both think they are good drivers.
This poll is based on the assumption that older drivers are unsafe. I believe if you would research what groups are having the most driving accidents, you would find that older drivers are not the cause of most vehicle accidents. I suggest you direct your poll to groups who are more prone to having accidents, like: illegal aliens without insurance and driver licenses.
I guess you are right. 5 years is too long between testing, at that age. Things can happen instantly. My mom went to the store one time, and couldn't remember how to get home. There was no indication before then that there was a problem. We found out later that she had had a mini stroke. The only thing effected was her short-term memory.
So you are saying that allow 5 yrs to lapse before checking again. They might drive fine at 65 and then at 66 have problems. I think yearly from 65 and on. They should also be re-evaluated after every incident-speeding ticket on up. I've been behind or in front of very old people who shouldn't be on the road. They are as bad as teenagers.

October 28, 2009 at 12:28 a.m.I said 65 and I think every 5 years after that. That way, problems can be caught yearly enough, so that innocent people do not get hurt.
