i've watched glenn beck and o'reilly's opinionated propaganda, who hasn't, just to get rilled up from such idiocy :) so for real news i choose to watch c-span :) and actually last week they had a panel on no child left behind, and how they have to reform it because the prev. administration did such a lousy job. american progress held the forum... look it up. and comparing w bush's intellect with obama's, falls quite short, obama's encouragment to children is quite needed. the speech will be on c-span tuesday, and i'm sure they will air it again in the evening... my children will be watching, and i will encourage them and arm them with knowledge so they will do better than their parents. because that is the american dream. and i believe that barack obama has the children's education in the front of his mind... becasue we are so behind in the world in education... that there's no wonder we're having to deal with such economic atrocities.
For those who are promoting the idea of the President speaking directly to the nation's children in their public schools via telescreen, would you feel the same way about George W. Bush speaking to your children without mediation into a classroom you've already lost control of? I wouldn't either.
If anything, I'd protest it based on the fact that the President oversees the Dept of Education which compromises local control of education by handing down destructive one-size-doesn't-fit-all mandates. Think "No Child Left Behind". (Obama can fight this at any time but hasn't.)
As for the Economy: He has quadrupled our deficit since he got elected. Then has the audacity to blame it on Bush I didn't want him to use my tax dollars to bail out companies that were spending too much of their profits on CEO's and their lavish lifestyles. It is the American way to chase your dreams and not expect the government to bail you out if you fail. We have to learn to stand on our own feet and take responsibility for our own actions. Those companies should have gone bankrupt and started from square one. That way they would have remembered how important the almighty dollar is and how rewarding it is when you create something from nothing. It wasn't OUR responsibilty to bail any of those companies out.
Domestic Policy: He's making sure those illegal immigrants get your social security. They already qualify and are receiving it and guess what....They aren't even in America anymore!
Change is good. Don't get me wrong. But why, all of a sudden, do we need a president to tell us what we already know? We've known this stuff for a long time. Why didn't we do anything before? Why leave it up this man?
And it doesn't matter who the president is. Then , now or in the future....people will always talk bad about the things they do or don't do. So don't think that people are only talking bad about obama.
You know my kids used to watch this "Channel One" at the beginning of their school day. Are the parents going to want to screen that first now? I'm sure it contained politicians/political info too. This is about continued disrespect for the office of the President just because some cannot accept that he won the election. It's disgusting that VISD is caving to the right wind. This is teaching a horrible lesson to children who should be encouraged to strive for greatness, even be the President of the USA someday.
why would it be wrong to let the future of this country be influenced by a man who has broken boundries and is working his tail off to get some footing under this country. (have you seen how gray he's gotten) i feel bad for this man, here he is trying to take care of a massive amount of humanity in this country, a country that is obviously not working... to encourage the youth of this nation to work hard and persivere... what it wrong with people? how is this an evil thing??? i am so confused about this extreme illogical point of view. :(
There is going to be a guide that every classroom from K-12 will receive that the teachers will use to discuss the President's speech after it airs. It contains questions that is designed to get each student thinking. Such as "What is the President asking me to do?" and "What can I do to better my community and government?" Since when do WE work for the government? The government was designed and is supposed to work for US. If this was something that WE all wanted, then I'm all for it. But that is not the case. We've got some one controlling OUR money, OUR decisions, OUR Healthcare and now OUR education. It's another step he'll take towards US to push our backs against the wall. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!
Yes, I do look at what my children and read and view on TV. That is part of being a responsible parent. I do not censur them for opposing views but I care what my children are exposed to. I do not throw them out into the world and hope they learn right from wrong. I did not say I oppose the speech, I stated I should know what the speech contains. The speech is written, why can't it be published for parents prior to the broadcast.
Brainwash are you kidding! If our students can be brainwash in 10 minutes are so God help us! You obviously have no respect for our students and our government! Are hitler's decendent? It's up to each student to decide if he/ she value Education after all that is what the speech is about! Some students have been brainwashed all this years by parents who only see one picture not the whole colored picture! The super should have asked the faculty and not taken it upon Himself to follow his personal opinion! The health reform is going to pass will you move out of the country? It's our rt as citizens after all we are all immigrants except the Indians!
We are in the middle of a heated goverment take over of our health care and the kids were to be involved in what they can do in "helping the President"? This President is not truthful or transparent. If Heath care is a right, what about my car payment, my electric bill, my house payment, my newspaper bill? Don't sit around waiting for goverment to take care of you. Go to work and help yourselves and others who can't.
This is an issue because parents don't teach their children. I'm sure there is more to his agenda than just telling kids to stay in school. schools have enough to deal with without getting into the political arena.
I really don't see the problem with this. Yes, the man has made some awful decisions while in office, but none of that is expected to be mentioned in this particular speech. Why wouldn't we want our children to hear encouraging words about how important education is? He will be speaking the truth, education is the key to success! To deny our children a part in history, because lets face it people will talk about this for years, is completely absurd.
Ok, good points are made. Unfortunately, THIS IS HISTORY-right or wrong. True, his track record leaves very little to be desired, but I feel it's a far cry from "re-education"(sorry Alton). We, as parents, will have the choice to explain what Obama means, and the teachers can explain, also. I have no problem with it. In fact, I can't wait to see how the late night talk shows rip it up! I would rather it be broadcast for ALL to see, and, maybe it will cut into regular programming. then I can form my own opinion and talk it over with my children. --------------We'll see what happens--------------
Well HG123 my tax dollar goes for education.I didn't even like it when Bush did it. Wasteful spending. And for as Obama goes the only lesson he is teaching is how to spend our money. What a lesson to teach childern. I am glad that the school board said NO.
Cora...I'm not sure if it is VISD or the ignorant parents who call and make a non-issue an issue. I actually heard someone say that President Obama is going to try and brain wash our kids about Health Care Reform!! What these parents are really teaching their kids is intolerance. Bush couldn't speak in complete sentences and use proper language, but no one thought twice about letting their kids listen to him struggle through simple sentences. PLAIN IGNORANCE and FEAR! If the President of the United States wants to encourage my child to stay in school, then school is the proper place to listen to him speak. My child better have that option!!!
I think there should be an option to see it or not. The speech is only about the importance of education. I'm not sure why VISD would be against telling kids to stay in school.
I feel uncomfortable with any federal elected offical giving a direct message to students, except at college graduations. It just to close to re-education camps.
I cannot believe this. I hope that if some right-winger teis the same thing he/she will be also not be allowed. I do not have a lot of disposable income but i will use what I ahve to hire lawyers to prevent it. At least there should have been an option for those who wanted to see our president.

Dawn,
Don't leave comments like this on my wall again.
Why didn't you say this when you were commenting on this poll for everyone to see?
