What about Shergar - the only champion horse to be kidnapped by a terrorist organization (IRA)...

Apparently most of you have never heard of Pharlap. An Australian racehorse from the early 1900's, got poisoned when he came to race in the US. Check out the movie, an oldie but goodie

In my opinion and not to take anything away from the above list is Dan Patch. Never lost a race and set the world record in the mile may times.
No doubt that Secretariat was the best known and the most fascinating.
