Big Brown not a lock at Preakness

Big Brown was so overpowering in winning the Kentucky Derby, none of the 19 rivals he dusted off is showing up for another try in the Preakness Stakes. Lady Bulldogs finish fifth at state

AUSTIN – For the first time since 2001 the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs failed to medal at the UIL State Class 3A golf tournament. The Lady Bulldogs posted a final round 365 to finish the two-day event at 705, well behind two-time champion Andrews. Andrews posted a 305-315–620 to defend its title by 25 strokes over Monahans (313-332–645). more >>

Athletes bear the heat at state meet

AUSTIN – Hot. Sweltering. Scorching. With temperatures soaring into the upper 90s, the Texas high school meet track began Friday under oppressive conditions. Athletes and spectators baked in the sun at the Mike A. WACO – The Shiner St. Paul Lady Cardinals’ dream season ended in a nightmarish sixth inning Friday at the TAPPS state softball tournament. Bellville Faith Academy (11-7) took advantage of five walks and sent 12 batters to the plate in an eight-run sixth to overcome a 5-4 deficit and defeat the Lady Cardinals 12-6 in the Class 1A/2A semifinals at the Waco ISD complex. more >>

AUSTIN – The last time the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs found themselves off the medal stand at the UIL state golf tournament was in 2001 when they finished fifth. Salado beats Edna in Game 1 of series

LOCKHART – Edna coach Kensey Allen would have gladly settled for seven runs in Thursday’s Game 1 of the Cowboys’best-of-three Class 2A area playoff series against Salado. Edna scored seven times but it wasn’t near enough as the No. 6 Eagles slugged their way to a 19-7 victory in a game stopped after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. more >>
