A Houston native, Gheni Platenburg joined The Advocate in February 2010.

Initially serving as the crime/courts reporter, Gheni now covers the diversity and courts beats.

Victoria is the most recent stop for Gheni, who has lived away from Texas for the last couple of years.

In 2007, Gheni graduated cum laude from Florida A&M University (FAMU)where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism with a concentration in newspaper journalism and a minor in business administration.

While at FAMU, Gheni worked for The FAMUAN, the university's newspaper.

Gheni expanded her academic achievements in 2009 when she not only graduated with a master’s degree in community journalism from the University of Alabama, but she also simultaneously completed a prestigious John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Community Journalism Fellowship.

While pursuing her master’s degree, she did extensive research on the media’s coverage of minorities, fueling her motivation to cover diverse communities.

Gheni's resume boasts a political journalism fellowship with the Washington Center for Politics & Journalism as well as employment with several media outlets including The Tallahassee Democrat; the Houston Sun; WFSU-TV/The Florida Channel, The Anniston Star and Bloomberg Television.

As a native Houstonian, Gheni is happy to not only be back in the Lone Star State, but also to be only a 2-hour drive from her hometown.

When the devoted pet owner is not at work, she spends her time attempting to work out, shopping and trying out the local cuisine.
