VC Drama Department presents “Tartuffe” by Molière
Story by Darin Kazmir • Submitted by DarinkThe Victoria College Drama Department will present “Tartuffe” by Jean-Baptiste Molière Thursday, October 22 through Saturday, October 24 in the Johnson Symposium on the VC campus. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. each night.
“Tartuffe” is the story of a family that is outraged and nearly ruined when a con man, posing as a religious fanatic out to save the souls of the wicked, dupes the patriarch of the family into signing over his fortune. Originally banned by the Catholic church in France in 1664, Molière's classic comedy about religious hypocrisy and the strength of family is considered just as powerful, poignant and hilarious today as it was over four hundred years ago.
VC drama instructor Jeremy White said he wanted the students to produce a classical play this semester, and he chose “Tartuffe” because he feels it is one of the funniest classical plays ever written.
Twelve VC students will be featured in the performance, along with 5 students working as production assistants.
The production is open to the public and tickets may be purchased at the door. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with a student ID. Some content may not be appropriate for children under 13.
