They say image is everything. While, it is idealistic to wish that a medical facility is viewed as the epitome of health, it is realistic to have the common sense to know that it is not possible. Human beings come in all types of shapes, sizes, colors and creeds. That's a fact. There's no denying that being overweight increases a person's risk for various maladies, but CMC's approach to their solution to the issue is misguided. I'd rather have an overweight, nurse with her head on straight, attending to me, than some skinny nurse with a hidden drug, alcohol or emotional problem. The human body houses a person's soul. The soul is what makes a person a person - regardless of the body's "mass". So, what's next Mr. David Brown? Do you plan to quit accepting overweight patients?

"I've been contacted by..." That is the classic, vague statement to conjure up unfounded concern. Affordable housing is the key to all this brouhaha. Over-price housing is what we have currently because of supply and demand. Realtors and landlords have been raking it in for years. How about giving the average family a break? I hope they build 20 new apartment complexes and 42 new subdivisions!

I have no sympathy for the Lakeview residents who are trying to keep their ivory towers free from the blight that surrounds them. Welcome to the real world. Not everyone has the wherewithal to surround themselves with the niceties of a better homes and gardens lifestyle. There are some who have to do what it takes to eke out a living with whatever means are at their disposal.

I dare say, one of the attractive features of Lakeview is the large lots, large homes and the absence of city taxes. These perks come with a downside sometimes. I suspect, this is more about an eyesore, than the fact that x-rated videos are being sold across the road. Years ago, I watched Lakeview being developed from pasture land. Anyone who bought property and built homes in that subdivision had to have seen the older, run-down properties across the road. These old and worn-out homes may be an unwanted blight to Lakeview, but nonetheless, they're home to quite a few people.

This is the same scenario as developers who build under the flight paths of runway only to have the residents later on protest the noise of aircraft overhead.

I have a suggestion, close off the Upper Mission Valley Road entrance to Lakeview and make a nice long winding entrance/exit to Pozzi Road. You can come and go without ever having to view the undesirables across the street. Your idyllic views of utopia can then persevere.

Every time there's a story about the fire department, police department, the City of Victoria in general, the armchair quarterbacks and critics pounce all over it. It's both amusing and disgusting how many people there are who love to criticize. Being a democracy, you do have the right to speak your mind, but... nevertheless it's still disheartening to see so much pettiness.

Way to go, VISD. Thumb your noses at us local photographers... after all, we pay VISD taxes all year, for many years. Let a San Antonio company who pays nothing, in the way of taxes, walk away with the money. Don't allow the students to express themselves through a one-on-one session with a local photographer... so, typical of our VISD bureaucracy.

Victoria has a historical commission? What for? All tell and no show because our historical structures and artifacts have just about disappeared. Victoria is woefully deficient. The Denver Hotel... gone, the train depot - abandoned, burned down by transients, all the classic movie theaters - gone. If it weren't for private enterprise, we'd have lost even more... the Opera House, The Pump House. Victoria is a very historical city with very little of its history preserved. How sad.

Apparently, whoever owns the mall does not live in Victoria and could care less about the mall itself, much less the Victoria community proper. Their asinine tenant regulations and exorbitant rent are not business friendly and causes existing tenants to vacate and potential candidates to look elsewhere. This is neither the Victoria City Council's fault, nor the city management, nor the chamber of commerce. However, the city should levy a special tax on the mall owners if occupancy drops below a certain percentage. Watch how fast the mall management attracts new and keeps existing tenants.

Well Golly Gee Whiz! A news story about the county employee insurance premiums going up? Are we going to do a story about every single private employer faced with the same dilemma? Of course not, but we're all in the same boat. So, why is this news? Oh, yes... because it involves tax dollars. Instead of just ante'ing up, I wish someone would address the sad fact that we can't afford health care without insurance and the irony that we can't afford the insurance! We live in the country with the best health care in the world. Trouble is, we can't afford it!

    Way to show patriotism, Goliad...
