"Strong Families of Victoria came out of Dr. Wildmon's American Family Association. In the early days, Wildmon had chapters all over America, but for some reason, he abruptly canceled all his local affiliates.

At this point, we went local and formed our own nonprofit organization. In time, we lost our enthusiasm and the organization now supports only the National Day of Prayer. The association's only influence here today is their FM radio station at 88.5 on the dial."

AFA closed down all its local chapters because Wildmon was afraid that if one of the locals were sued for some crazy stunt they pulled, then the lawsuit might end up pulling the main organization in Tupelo in. Its the same reason that ALL of their political talk shows have a disclaimer that says in effect, "The opinions expressed here do not necessarily represent those of this station or AFA."--even though all the hosts are employees of AFA.

    Stone,
Your factoids are interesting and certainly buttress the erroneous position you promote, but the miss the fact that the long view and large sweep of history describe the white, racist flight from the Democratic party--particularly in the South--to the GOP. You can point out exceptions all day, but that only highlights the rule--the GOP is the home of the racist, rich, white man manipulating the political and governmental system to his advantage alone.

    Mr Williams,

I agree. The righties won't answer your questions either because they don't want to reveal their true motives, or because they are so unself-aware, that they can't.

And BTW, the GOP started bailing on African Americans in 1877, when in exchange for the house giving the election to Rutherford B Hayes rather then Samuel Tilden, who actually won the popular vote, the Federal Military occupation of the South and reconstruction was ended. This was done so that the GOP moneybags in the North could profitably join with the moneybags in the South to exploit cheap black freedmen labor. The Compromise of !877 set the Southerners free to deal with blacks anyway they wanted to--ie. the Knights of the White Camilla, the Ku Klux Klan as well as through the Black Codes and their later successors Jim Crow. This favor toward money and "the captains of industry" continued to grow in the GOP resulting in the policies that brought on the great depression in 1929.

    Stone,

Why should I care what Forbes says. It is a magazine by the rich directed at the rich glorifying the rich and their exploits--Forbes 500 anyone? Of course they're going to give themselves a pass. The same with your "study."

    Stone, listening to Rush again?

Fact is beginning with Nixon and the "Southern Strategy" the GOP courted the anti-civil rights conservative Southern Democrats, and as the so called "Rockefeller" GOPers were pushed out by the radical conservatives, the GOP was transformed by the flood of Conservative Anti-civil rights Dems who became Republicans. Reagan effectively made the transition permanent in the elections of 1980 and 1984. After 1994 when the GOP took control of Congress, the GOP became what the Southern Conservative Dems of old were--the Know-nothing, anti-minority, anti-immigrant party of old, rich white people, who are interested only in keeping and expanding what THEY have and everyone else can go jump.

No stone YOU are wrong. Look at the policies pursued prior to the 1929 crash and you find taxes cut for the very richest, stock purchases using borrowed money, rampant speculation and no regulation of market practices. It is no coincidence that it was only after the repeal of the Glass-Steagel act--that kept commercial banks from entering the market along with other dangerous policies--that conditions were again ripe for the creation of a market that led to the conflagration we just experienced. Stone you are engaging in historical revision to justify your right-wing market fundamentalism. Hayak, and von Mises et al may register protest, but Keynes policies implemented by FDR saved the economy after the 1929 crash.

  • BorgLord

I don't know about Bernanke, but I do know that right wing market fundamentalism is what got us into the mess to begin with. One cannot let markets run unbridled unless one wants to have crashes that benefit no one save the very wealthy. If one looks at the 1929 crash it was caused by the same basic factors that caused this one--under regulated markets and out right greed--the perfect storm caused by right wing market fundamentalism.

Obuma??? Wow, that is so original.

As our President recently told us, the US has been increasing its discovery of natural gas and oil for the last several years. We now import less than we did in 2001. Our demand has decreased as well. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Mike and EdithAnne, you both make very insightful observations about the nature of Climate Change deniers. We resist any information that goes against what we already believe to be true. And if the belief is ideological or religious enough no amount of evidence will change the believer's mind. Only a belief denying experience has a chance of changing the mind of the true anti-climate change acolytes.
