Boy, I could go on for days about the stupidity that is the VISD School Board. First of all, any of you out there that voted for any of the current board members, or did not vote at all, are solely to blame. Klimist - here is a guy that doesn't even send his kids to VISD schools - yet he thinks he has done a wonderful job as a board member. Hmmm....well, what more can we expect when our new President names as Secretary of Education a man whose district he didn't even send his own children to? 30 to 50 thousand signatures? Does he realize there are only 52,000 registered voters in this County, and not all of them even live in VISD's district? Does he not also know that less than 30,000 Victoria County residents voted for the President in the recent election? This guy is a joke. Then we have Lou Svetlik. This guy truly is a piece of work. He and Ray Walden were extremely instrumental in inadvertently causing consolidation, then ran against it. Their incessant whining and crying over how Stroman was being mistreated caused this whole mess. Great politicians - create a problem, then campaign as the answer. The others on the Board are hardly worth mentioning. They are but members of the flock. I have an idea. I think we should demand that each Board member collect 30 to 50 thousand signatures in order to retain their positions on the Board. Wouldn't that be something? The bottom line is this: 1,000 votes cast in a school board election simply is not enough. If you don't vote, you hurt us all. Under the current staggered reelection system, bord members not up for reelection can exert far too much influence in getting their cronies reelected, when only 1,000 people vote. We saw it in the last election. Klimist helped Keeling considerably, and Walden did the same for Svetlik. This overabundance of ignorance in Victoria is paying big dividends for those who wish to advance personal agendas and feed their own egos. We have nobody to blame but ourselves.
Teens are getting pregnant in Victoria? Reaheheheeeaaaalllllyy!!! Well, have any of you seen "Field of Dreams"? Remember the line, "If you build it, they will come"? OK, follow me here. Has anyone noticed the number of public housing/government assisted projects in this town? Do ya maybe think that some of these girls reside in these wonderful public housing complexes? The building contractors love these projects, along with neighborhood developers and real estate companies. So you know what they do? They donate to campaigns of local politicians (see Geanie Morrison, Victoria County Judge, Victoria County Commissioners, Mayor, and City Council). These slimeballs in turn mortgage the morality, security and prosperity of our community in order to get elected/reelected. Remember this in the upcoming elections.
Thanks you, wayward.
Americans are so backward when it comes to dealing with perceived societal problems. Most Americans think they exist in a vacuum. They never want to look at history. They never want to look around them at what is working elsewhere. Look at the northern European countries that have very liberal pornography laws - they have virtually no rape. Look at Switzerland (where every home MUST contain a gun) - they have a very low murder rate. Look at countries with low or no drinking ages - they have far lower rates of abuse, and subsequent breaking of laws (DWI). Most people here seem to be mortified by drugs. Have any of you been to Amsterdam? Last I heard, they have less hobos than any major city in the US. Americans need to cure themselves of this narcissism that compels them to believe they can change everything in life by making a law.
LBB, 1. You will see exactly how many "bandwagoners" Hagan has come May. I predict he will collect 82% of the vote. 2. Have you attended a City Council meeting since Hagan was elected? He has cast very few "no" votes. The problem is that NONE of the other members of the Council EVER vote "no", so his votes stand out. He votes appropriately and accordingly. The man is a pragmatist. He only votes against waste, not expenditure. I suggest you give him a call and talk to him. I have had the pleasure of talking to him at great length both in person and on the phone, and you should do the same. 3. If everyone is so unhappy with the pay situation on the Council, then why do they all (save Hagan) oppose term limits? Why would you want to do a job you don't feel properly compensated for, in perpetuity? 4. The reason it is difficult to find good people to run for City Council is because they don't want to associate themselves with the scum that currenty resides on the Council. If there were fresh faces at least every 6 years, perhaps more citizens wouldn't have this view. I know several people who could easily be elected and would serve honorably, but they are not about to get caught up in that cesspool downtown. It has gotten to be a culture.
Karie,
Could it be that "persons of color" commit crimes punishable by the death penalty at a higher rate than white caucasians? I love the liberal mindset that thinks all things should be proportionate. Blacks should comprise a proportionate amount of law enforcement officers, regardless how many apply... These same people don't seem to care that blacks comprise a higher percentage of sports teams and the entertainment industry than their numbers dictate nationally. I think I will protest at the next Olympics, when 65% of the US track athletes are not white.
Nice letter Kayla. I'm sorry you have been forced to live in this dump of a town. But let this teach you a life lesson. When you are older, and in a position of authority, don't have such disdain for the youth that the older generations now have for you. Resist bad ordinances like curfews. Call and complain to the Police Chief when they harass teenagers for "hanging out." Fight against stupid school uniforms. In short, don't be a hypocrite. The ruling class of this town is a disgrace. They constantly chastise the youth for their style, behavior and habits. But keep one thing in mind - this is the same generation that brought us LSD, quaaludes, cocaine, straking, long hair on males, and swinging. They have so much shame in them for their past misdeeds that they now feel the need to project it on the youth of today. I sincerely hope that you can find a way out of this cesspool known as Victoria.
100% agreed. I was talking about subsidizing the industry just to get it going. I don't want the gov getting involved in anything, really. As for forcing the taxpayers to pay for something they are not suuportive of, what about abortion clinics, public schools, ACORN, the EPA.....need I go on? I am froced to pay taxes to cover expenses for 99% of the things I would spend a lifetime trying to destroy.
xring,
You are right on about the courts. I blame quite a bit of that on the racial situation, as well. Pressure from groups like La Raza and LULAC often produces an environment that is not conducive to the true carriage of justice. But what is the answer? Part of me would like to see judges held criminally liable for the illegal activities committed by those they release back into the public. But if we do that, then judges would probably never allow anyone the opportunity for freedom while awaiting trial. It is a double-edged sword.
Sure, Raul. It is simple supply and demand. Take set-aside acreage in the US thet the gov is paying to lay fallow, and pay the farmers to grow the product. Have you ever heard of supply and demand? Who would be willing to kill of the price of drugs fell astronomically? Increase the supply, demand will remain relatively unchanged, and the price will come tumbling down. Then incentive will be destroyed. The problem is, 99% of the morins in Washington are lawyers, and have no concept of the laws of business. These idiots writing policy would be equivalent to allowing car salesmen to design automobiles for the purpose of aerodynamics, when they have no knowledge in the laws of physics.
