Kevin, It's okay to be confused...you show a proclivity for it.
I am speaking of first time offenders of many so called sexual crimes, Pedophiles are a different kind of sex-offender and are attracted to pre-puberty children , (to make it simple for you, ones with no hair ) I am speaking of the ones Boyfriend / Girlfriend, Older women with younger teenage boyfriends, or older men with younger girlfriends. Not about a predator or child rapist. Are Americans aware that a VERY large number of Registered Sex Offenders have never touched or raped anyone, let alone a child? But guilt by association on the Sex Offender Registry labels them all as a “pervert” a “pedophile” and a “predator” for life. Please Kevin do some real research and then speak the truth, not the myth!
The vast majority of people on the registry are normal people looking for a normal life. People that have made mistakes in the past, but that is where they reside - in the past.
Yes, some people listed on the registry are dangerous, and need to be looked after. Then there exists the rest of them that pose no risk, incest offenders, young boyfriend/ Girlfriend cases and so on. Most knew their victims and it was not the stranger danger case.
I can do nothing but push forward, if only for my belief in humanity, the belief that someone somewhere will gain some common sense and see that this is wrong, and it needs to change.
I do not think the public knows how many victims this registry makes, not just the ones on it, that have paid their debt but their children also who are harassed and shamed, they are guilty of nothing but it still affects them also.
All I ask is people to look at the real facts and the amount of time and money that is put into the registry for low risk offenders that should not be on it.
I also do not think the public knows that the offender on the registry will always get older, but the victim stays forever young, in other words a 18 year old could have had a affair with a 15 year old, and now he is 40 and she is still 15 on the registry, so the facts are hidden, every one thinks it was a older man that molested a young girl, which was not the case. If it was not for the money made, by the industry that has been built up around sex -offenders we would not be having this debate
I applaud the Editorial board for the Victoria Advocate, at using some common sense and understanding that all offenders are not the same. Should we banish all people that have made mistakes in their life? Drugs hurt more children and families , so banish all drug offenders, Dui offenders and while we are at it Tax cheats. All people deserve a second chance and sex-offenders on this dreaded register are not all the same, please citizens’ of this great state educate yourselves to the true dangers and not the myths.
The fear and loathing against Registered Sex Offenders that is currently considered acceptable needs to stop before additional Citizens and communities are harmed. Our Legislators need to rectify this mess they have created by bucketing ALL sexual related acts into Sex Offender Crimes. The broad brush that the Legislators have been allowed to use across our population will continue to grow until it reaches into your home and labels you and your family.
The Sex Offender Registries are not protecting anyone, they are a means to humiliate, degrade, re-prosecute and destroy the lives of thousands of innocent citizens.
I am not taking up for the ones that have never changed, but for the ones that have for years paid their debt to society and are NOT a danger to the public, I see no reason why they should be on the registry , It is time for offenders and their family, friends to take a stand, this has gone on long enough, Vote Perry out, and all the rest of them, with your family’s, friends and concern citizens’ you number in the millions!
The Registries, if we really need them, need to be returned to their original intent, to list only the most dangerous, untreatable and repeat offenders.
