I would like to think, in this day and age of booster clubs and sponsorships, that we could find a way to provide scholarships to lifeguards-in-training who need help in getting this certification.
The pool does so much good for those who cannot afford private facilities. My wife and I will pledge $10 to such a fund to be administered by the city or by the certification authority.

What a thoughtful, funny and insightfully-written review! In my best Oliver imitation, "Please, Dianna, can we have some more?
You write of these deeply human issues with such eloquence, courage and compassion. Thank you.
I am a 62-year-old man. As a child, I lived all over the USA and was sexually molested from ages 6-10, in the chance encounters of passing through life. I was never warned. In fact, no one ever talked about it.
My good fortune was that I was big enough to be able to push away unwanted attentions, which is certainly not the case for everyone, as sexual abuse can extend into infancy.
Growing up in the 1950's and 60's, I lived in a world of secrets -- societal, familial, personal. We dared not share them so these secrets turned in toxic shame. Instead of something inappropriate happening to me, I believed I was inappropriate, my feelings were not to be honored, I was somehow a broken soul.
It has been tremendously healing over the years to accept that I am not alone in my experiences. I believe a production like the Vagina Monologues will help create healthy conversations that will lead to individual and community healing and growth.
I'm proud of the courage all are exhibiting in producing this important work and to having the dialog so our healing can continue.
I am a fan of Gabe's writing. However, on this story, I believe he did a poor writing and research job.
To state that Victoria shifted FROM the Dems to the Reps is ludicrous to anyone who lives here.
Secondly, to use the 2008 Presidential primary as the comparison to the 2010 non-Presidential primary is specious, at best. This year there was a strongly contested governor's race in the Republican primary as there was a strongly contested Democratic primary in 2008.
Compare gubernatorial to gubernatorial to get any reasonable comparison. Gabe can do much better than this.
What a beautifully written, lucid and insightful column! I finally understand these error codes.
There was not a hint of condescension or patronization and a lovely humorous, inclusive narrative. Please keep writing and we will keep reading. You have a gift and the world will support it!
I want to thank everyone for commenting on my letter. I was attempting humor and irony and, as my wife warned me before I sent this in, I had missed the mark. I was far too in love with my words to see it. Thank you, exresident, for your digging out my intent.
One thing we all must do is to get involved and stay involved. We are all in this together and by your being willing to read and comment, it is a major step. Thanks all.
What I experience conforms, in the greatest part, to my expectations. We are in for a world-wide recovery like the we've never seen before. We have to think and behave globally to get in on it and maintain our exceptionalism.
We are subscribers and know how hard it is to be a journalist and to survive in this new marketplace.
That said, how does it happen that you publish the same story on 2 consecutive days (one was merely shortened), the same photo, just cropped. It is important that we understand your editorial review process.
This is my first time attempting to participate. If I understand, Chris, you "came" on the air at 10:10am. I'm still not getting video. Is everyone else?
