"Celebrating Veterans I received an email today with an amazing photo taken in 1918. Eighteen thousand soldiers and sailors posed in a formation to create an image of the Statue of of Liberaty. Unfortunately I was unable to copy the photo so I could share it. Snopes has an article on it. Take a look, it's a great statement in rememberence of the people who served our country! I've copied the email below: "America I find it amazing that this photo, taken so many years ago, actually still exists! And now someone has put it online for all of us to see. This INCREDIBLE picture was taken in 1918. It is 18,000 men preparing for war in a training camp at Camp Dodge in Iowa . EIGHTEEN THOUSAND MEN!!!!! What a priceless gift from our grandfathers..." Please go to http://www.snopes.com/photos/patriotic/liberty.asp Then be sure to go to the following site for similar photos taken by the same man: http://www.hammergallery.com/images/peoplepictures/people%20pictures.htm " 5/22/2009 - 03:10 PM |

""A Dog's Purpose? Something a little different.... I received this in an email and decided to share it. I know this makes me look like a sentimental old coot, but.... there you are. A Dog's Purpose? "Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.'' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live. He said,''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The Six-year-old continued,''Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'' Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. Take naps. Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently." Pretty good advice!" 5/4/2009 - 10:44 AM |

"Ah yes, the Obama administration in action..... From the Washington Times article: "The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in "rightwing extremist activity," saying the economic recession, the election of America's first black president and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of white-power militias. A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority. "It may include groups and INDIVIDUALS (emphesis, mine) that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says...." So, best watch what you say on this forum, in letters to the editor or in public. Those who "Believe in change" may be willing to rat you out. Maybe you'd best warn your pastor to not read any Biblical passages that could appear to be against homosexual activity or speak out about partial-birth abortions! Of course this would please the folks who can't stand Paul Tasin (who, by the way I don't always agree with). All you vets, you'd best walk the line after your tour of duty - the neighborhood snitches will likely be watching your every move. Oh, and those of you don't own guns but want to - better get on the stick...." 4/15/2009 - 03:06 PM |

"Interesting reading for the anti-cop faction and Tyler fans in Victoria: From the Administrative Guide for the Texas Law Enforcement Recognition Program: The Texas Police Chiefs Association developed the Recognition Program to assist Texas agencies in meeting their professional obligations to the citizens of Texas. An appointed Committee of professional Police Chiefs from across the state developed the Recognition Program and identified the Best Practices for Texas Law Enforcement. This Committee now conducts the final review of an agency’s efforts and awards “Recognized” status. The Texas Law Enforcement Recognition Program is a voluntary process where police agencies in Texas prove their compliance with law enforcement’s current Best Practices. These Best Practices were carefully developed by Texas Law Enforcement professionals to assist agencies in the efficient and effective delivery of service and the protection of individual’s rights. The Texas Police Chiefs Association developed the Recognition Program to assist Texas agencies in meeting their professional obligations to the citizens of Texas. An appointed Committee of professional Police Chiefs from across the state developed the Recognition Program and identified the Best Practices for Texas Law Enforcement. This Committee now conducts the final review of an agency’s efforts and awards “Recognized” status. Being “Recognized” means that the agency meets or exceeds all of the identified Best Practices for Texas Law Enforcement Agencies. These Best Practices cover all aspects of law enforcement operations including use of force, protection of citizen rights, pursuits, property and evidence management, and patrol and investigative operations. While being “Recognized” does not guarantee an agency will not make a mistake, it does ensure that the agency has carefully thought about these critical issues, has developed policy and procedures to address them and has systems in place to identify and correct problems.
